Alex Sanchez, a top graduate of America's most prestigious culinary academy, The Culinary Institute of America, comes to Mumbai as Executive Chef of The Table. He has spent the last 8 years refining his expertise in some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s finest kitchens.
His career includes cooking with culinary giants such as Roland Passot at La Folie, Michael Mina at his eponymous restaurant, and David Kinch at Manresa; with brief apprenticeships at Daniel Patterson’s Coi and Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry. During his tenure at these establishments, they all received stars in the Michelin Guide, with both Michael Mina and Manresa receiving 2 stars each.
Alex then took the bold step to relocate to Mumbai, having never previously been to India, to take up the helm as Executive Chef at The Table restaurant – no mean feat for a 26 year old!
Jay Yousuf, a graduate in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, spent the first 10 years of his career working with various telecom companies including NEC America, Siemens and Motorola. Although he was predominately based in the US in cities such as Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Philadelphia, he also worked overseas in Munich and Tokyo.
In 1997, Jay founded his own company - Communication Methods - the largest authorised distributor for Nortel Networks in northern California and Miami, Florida.
After spending 23 years in the US, Jay finally returned to India in 2007. Having had the opportunity to live and work abroad, and experience a variety of cuisines and restaurants, Jay’s passion for exceptional food made him realise that there was a need for a high quality and innovative fine dining venue in Mumbai. This inspired him to fulfil his dream of opening his own restaurant and having lived in San Francisco for 14 years, he wanted to bring a taste of the city’s distinctive food culture back with him to Mumbai.
Gauri Devidayal, a law graduate from the University College London and a qualified Chartered Accountant, went on to pursue a career as a tax consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers and later with KPMG. In 2007, having lived in London for 8 years, Gauri decided it was time to return to the warmer climes of Mumbai. In early 2008, she met Jay and was soon persuaded to leave KPMG and to join him on his restaurant adventure… With no previous experience of the hospitality industry, Gauri bravely supported Jay in conceptualising and creating The Table.
Gauri and Jay married in December 2010 and spent their honeymoon in exotic Colaba, perfecting and opening one of Mumbai’s most inspirational and unique dining establishments!
